Kati Haycock President Kati is one of the nation’s leading child advocates in education. She previously served as executive vice president of the Children's Defense Fund, the nation's largest child-advocacy organization. A native Californian, Haycock founded and served as president of the Achievement Council, a statewide organization that helps teachers and principals in predominantly minority schools improve student achievement. Before that, she served as director of the outreach and student affirmative-action programs for the nine-campus University of California System. |

Ivy Ellis Executive Assistant to the President
Ivy joined The Education Trust in 2000. She previously worked as an executive assistant/proposal coordinator for Facilities Management Company in Lanham, Md. She has held similar positions for the Department of Defense and other government entities throughout her 25-year career. |

Stephanie G. Robinson Principal Partner Emerita
A founding partner of Ed Trust in 1993, Stephanie worked with school boards, administrators, principals, teachers, and communities to implement policies and practices aimed at improving teaching and learning. She helped create the Standards-in-Practice professional development initiative that encouraged standards-based education in districts across the nation as well as Ed Trust’s National Center for Transforming School Counseling. Stephanie was a teacher and administrator in the Montclair, N.J., schools, education director for the National Urban League, and deputy superintendent of the Kansas City, Mo., schools. A graduate of Douglass College, she received a master’s in social work from Rutgers University and a doctorate in human growth and development/school administration from the Union Institute.

Paul Ruiz Senior Adviser A co-founder of The Education Trust, Paul has devoted more than 35 years of professional work to the educational success of all students, focusing specifically on improving achievement and closing the Latino and African-American achievement gap. A former school principal and central office administrator, he was selected Educator of the Year by the Michigan Department of Education. He served as chief academic officer for the District of Columbia Public Schools and senior director of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Residing in San Antonio, Paul works with local education and civic leaders in the Southwest to advance the work of Ed Trust. A graduate of St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Paul holds a master’s from Central Michigan University and a doctorate from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. |

Richard Lemons Vice President for Program and Policy Richard is former director of the Institute for Urban School Improvement at the University of Connecticut and was on faculty in the Department of Education Leadership, where he directed and taught within the doctoral program. He worked with the Connecticut Center for School Change and the Fairfield County Community Foundation, in collaboration with urban districts, to design and teach within the Urban School Leaders Fellowship, an initiative to enhance leadership capacity within urban districts. He previously was associate director of the Change Leadership Group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. A former high school teacher, Richard has led summer programs for at-risk youth and served as a change coach for urban high schools. He received a bachelor's in political science from North Carolina State University and master's and doctorates in administration, planning, and social policy from Harvard University. |

Sarah Almy Director of Teacher Quality Sarah comes to Ed Trust from The New Teacher Project, where she helped recruit, select, train, and support teachers to fill positions in high-need subjects within hard-to-staff schools. She directly oversaw TNTP’s partnerships with the District of Columbia, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Denver schools. Prior to TNTP, Sarah served as executive director of Yes Reading, a nonprofit organization that partners with schools to provide structured reading interventions for students. Sarah began her career as an elementary school teacher in Houston as a member of Teach for America. She holds a master's in policy analysis and evaluation from Stanford University and a bachelor's in political science from Boston College. |

Ellyn Artis Senior Research & Policy Analyst for Higher Education Ellyn has focused her career on eliminating system-driven inequalities for children and youth. At Ed Trust, she is closely involved in the leadership and system-change work of the Access to Success Initiative. Ellyn previously worked with the Casey Strategic Consulting Group at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, where she supported state and local government leadership teams in planning and overseeing their reform efforts. She began her career at Abt Associates, evaluating national youth-development programs. Ellyn holds a bachelor’s from Barnard College and a master’s in public affairs from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of International & Public Affairs. |

Sally Chan Higher Education Data and Research Analyst
Sally maintains and develops the College Results Online Web tool for Ed Trust. She previously worked as a requirements analyst at the Benefit Bank, a software company in Philadelphia, where she developed tax and medical eligibility screening software for the underprivileged. She also implemented the company's help desk from scratch, managing a staff of six call-center employees through tax-season operations. Sally later worked as a statistical analyst fellow at Greenpeace in Washington, D.C., where she developed and managed databases. Sally has a bachelor’s in experimental psychology and East Asian studies from Bryn Mawr College and master’s in finance from Drexel University. |

Karin Chenoweth Senior Writer Karin is a longtime reporter and education writer who has written for such publications as American Educator, American Teacher, and Education Week, as well as the Washington Post, where for five years she wrote a weekly column on schools and education. Prior to that she was senior writer and executive editor of Black Issues In Higher Education (now Diverse). Karin is author of How It’s Being Done: Urgent Lessons from Unexpected Schools (Harvard Education Press, 2009), which details how eight high-poverty and high-minority schools have achieved academic success, and It’s Being Done: Academic Success in Unexpected Schools (Harvard Education Press, 2007). Karin is a graduate of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. |

Candace Crawford Assistant Director for K-12 School and District Assistance
Candace works with schools and districts to train teachers in Ed Trust’s Standards-in-Practice protocol, a tool that helps teachers improve the rigor and quality of their assignments. Previously, she served as senior associate for teacher quality. During that time, she coordinated the “Instructional Practices of Effective Teachers Study,” a two-year study of middle school math teachers in the Kansas City, Mo., metropolitan area. Candace earned a master's in education policy at the University of Pennsylvania and has taught sixth-grade math and middle and high school history. She serves as president of the board of trustees of the Capital City Public Charter School, a nationally recognized expeditionary learning school in Washington, D.C. |

Karen Crews Senior Associate for Transforming School Counseling Before joining the Education Trust, Karen was a principal in Washington, D.C. She worked in the Montgomery County schools for 13 years as an assistant principal, school counselor, and central office instructional specialist. Karen has supervised high school counseling departments and worked with school counselors and teachers on understanding how to use data to inform instruction. She holds a bachelor’s in English from Howard University and a master’s in school counseling and a doctorate in educational leadership from Bowie State University in Maryland. In 2005, she received the dean’s dissertation of the year award for research on teacher perceptions of professional development activities. |

Jennifer Engle Assistant Director of Higher Education Prior to joining The Education Trust, Jennifer was senior research analyst and interim director of the Pell Institute, the research arm of the Council for Opportunity in Education, an organization that advocates on behalf of TRIO programs and students. She was the lead author of several reports, including “Demography Is Not Destiny: Increasing Graduation Rates for Low-Income Students at Large, Public Universities,” “Straight from the Source: What Works for First-Generation College Students,” and “Moving Beyond Access: College Success for Low-Income, First-Generation Students,” coauthored with Vincent Tinto. Jennifer earned her doctorate at American University. |

Anna Habash Rowan K-12 Policy Analyst Before joining the Ed Trust policy team, Anna worked as a research assistant on an early education reading project and interned for the Tennessee Department of Education. At Ed Trust, Anna analyzes NAEP and high school graduation-rate data. She also analyzes the use of assessment data to identify high-performing high-poverty and high-minority schools. Anna holds a bachelor’s in Spanish and a master's in education policy, both from Vanderbilt University. |

Daria Hall Director of K-12 Policy Development Daria joined The Education Trust in 2003 as a policy analyst. Since then, she has authored reports and participated in national policy conversations about accountability, high school graduation, and standards. She also leads the organization’s work to identify high-poverty, high-minority, high-performing schools. Previously, Daria worked as an analyst for the Texas Legislative Council. She is a graduate of Rice University and holds a master’s from the University of Wisconsin. |

Brooke Haycock Artist-in-Residence Brooke has been crafting and performing issues-focused theater with The Education Trust for nearly a decade. A former high school dropout from an urban public school system, Brooke now spends most of her time back in schools with students and educators, listening to their experiences of equity in education. Inspired by the work of documentarians Studs Terkel and Anna Deavere Smith, Brooke mixes interview with performance to produce incisive chronicles of opportunity and achievement in America. She holds a bachelor's from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a master's from Johns Hopkins University. |

Peggy Hines Director, Transforming School Counseling
As director of the Ed Trust’s National Center for Transforming School Counseling, Peggy consults with state departments of education, universities, and school districts. She is the former director of the school counselor program at Indiana State University and past president of the Indiana School Counselor Association. She was a member of the writing team for the American School Counselors Association’s National Model for School Counseling Programs and one of the developers of the MetLife Foundation’s National School Counselor Training Initiative. Peggy also was cofounder of the American Student Achievement Institute. |

Allison Horowitz K-12 Policy Analyst Allison joined Ed Trust after earning a master’s in public policy from Duke University. While attending graduate school, she consulted on topics such as teacher effectiveness and interned at the New York City Department of Education’s Office of Early Childhood Education. She previously worked as a research assistant at Child Trends, where she participated in research and evaluative projects related to fatherhood and parenting. Allison holds a bachelor’s degree in government and history from Georgetown University. |

Mamie Lynch Higher Education Research and Policy Analyst At Ed Trust, Mamie analyzes racial and economic gaps in college access and success and evaluates policies aimed at closing these gaps. Previously, she researched the factors affecting high school students’ decisions to study STEM fields in college and worked as a research assistant studying school desegregation patterns in Alexandria, Va. Mamie holds a bachelor’s and master’s in civil engineering from Villanova University and University of Delaware. She earned a master’s in public policy, with a concentration in education, social, and family policy, from the Georgetown University Public Policy Institute. |

Christina Theokas Director of Research Christina worked in the research and evaluation office of the Alexandria (Virginia) Public Schools. She trained principals and teachers on how to understand and use data to make instructional decisions and guide school reform efforts. She also evaluated the schools’ adolescent literacy initiative and worked with the city to conduct a youth assets and risks survey that guided implementation of a youth development plan. Christina also has worked as a therapist and did program and policy development at a special education school in Massachusetts. She has a doctorate from Tufts University, where her research focused on understanding what characteristics of families, schools, and communities promote positive development. Christina is on the editorial board of Developmental Psychology. |

Natasha Ushomirsky K-12 Data Analyst Natasha joined The Education Trust after completing a master’s in education policy and management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Before graduate school, she spent three years as a research assistant and associate analyst at Abt Associates, a research and consulting firm. At Abt, Natasha worked on a variety of research and analysis projects, including economic analyses of environmental regulations and market studies. Paula Amann Associate Editor Paula brings varied skills to The Education Trust from her careers as a journalist, author, and teacher. As news editor of Washington Jewish Week and earlier, as senior promotional writer at B’nai B’rith International, she won three Simon Rockower Awards for her magazine and newspaper work. She has led writing workshops for audiences ranging from teen journalists to senior citizens to college-going mothers on public assistance. Armed with a bachelor’s in biology from the University of Michigan and a master’s in bilingual education from Eastern Michigan University, Paula taught secondary science and mathematics in Chicago-area schools. |

Stephanie Germeraad Director of Communications Stephanie brings more than a decade of advocacy communications experience to The Education Trust. Her work in K-12 education—handling public affairs, media relations, and communications strategy for the U.S. Department of Education’s National Assessment Governing Board and for the Milken Family Foundation and its teacher-quality programs—has garnered national recognition: the Crystal Award of Excellence from the National Communicator Awards, the Public Relations Society of America’s PRism Award of Excellence, and the PRo Award from the Public Communicators of Los Angeles. Stephanie is a graduate of the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California. |

Dan Levin Director of Publications Dan was vice president for publications and editor of Trusteeship magazine for the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges for 20 years. At AGB, Dan developed more than 100 books, public-policy papers, and reports on higher education governance and trusteeship. He previously was editor of Campaigns & Elections, a magazine for political candidates and consultants. As associate editor of the American School Board Journal and Executive Educator magazines, published by the National School Boards Association, Dan’s feature articles won five National Education Reporting Awards from the Education Writers Association. He is a graduate of Boston University. |

Marie Garcia Melli National Organizations Liaison Marie works with many national organizations to expand and intensify the impact of The Education Trust’s advocacy efforts. She previously served as a field deputy and then as chief of staff to David Tokofsky, a board member of the Los Angeles Unified School District. In that role, she tracked and evaluated an array of education issues, cultivated relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, and directed the daily operations of the office. Dan Miller Manager, New Media Dan Miller joined Ed Trust to grow the organization’s online outreach and mobilize its supporters. Kate previously served as legislative counsel to both Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes and Rep. Artur Davis. She also served as legislative and policy adviser to former Maryland Lt. Gov. Ericka Miller Vice President for Operations and Strategic Leadership Ericka was vice president and director of the national executive search firm Isaacson, Miller, where she led the firm’s K-12 education practice. She previously was president and chief operating officer of The McKenzie Group, an education consulting firm that provided evaluation and technical assistance services to school districts, federal agencies, foundations, and other organizations. Ericka also served as a legislative assistant for education to former U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey and taught at Mills College, in Oakland, Calif. Ericka holds a bachelor’s from Georgetown University and a doctorate from Stanford University. She is a member of Leadership Washington’s Class of 2004. |
