Legislative Affairs Associate

The Education Trust, named one of the three most effective education organizations on Capitol Hill, seeks a Legislative Affairs Associate to work in the organization’s legislative affairs team. 

Reporting to the Director of Legislative Affairs, the Legislative Affairs Associate will help support the Education Trust’s federal and state legislative strategies. The work’s primary focus will be on using policy analysis as well as legislative tactics and strategies to advance the Education Trust’s agenda, message, and specific policy proposals at the federal level. The Legislative Affairs Associate will also help expand the work of the legislative affairs team into selective state legislative arenas.

 
Major Responsibilities


The Legislative Affairs Associate’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Analyze federal legislative and regulatory proposals relevant to the Education Trust’s agenda;
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Legislative Affairs as well as staff in the Education Trust’s policy and practice teams to develop original legislative language, develop appropriate responses to legislation, and produce collateral materials relevant to the organization’s legislative priorities;
  • Help develop materials that communicate and build support for the organization’s legislative priorities among a variety of audiences; and
  • Represent the Education Trust’s position on Capitol Hill and in other forums and venues.

 

Qualifications and Experience


We are looking for a combination of the following qualifications and experience:

  •  A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the legislative arena, preferably with experience on Capitol Hill;
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a bipartisan manner, across party lines;
  • A demonstrable knowledge of federal education policy – both K-12 and higher education – and federal legislative and regulatory processes;
  •  A deep commitment to providing all students with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in college and work;
  • The ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively;
  • Good interpersonal skills, including a desire and ability to work as part of a team;
  • At least a bachelor’s degree; and
  • The ability to prioritize and multitask, especially under deadline pressure.

 

Compensation


Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  The Education Trust offers a comprehensive benefits package.
