Kati Haycock
President

Kati Haycock is one of the nation's leading advocates in the field of education.

She currently serves as President of The Education Trust. Established in 1996, Ed Trust works for the high academic achievement of all students at all levels, pre-kindergarten through college.  The organization’s goal is to close the gaps in opportunity and achievement that consign too many low-income students and students of color to lives on the margins of the American mainstream. 

Known for years as a powerful force on education policy, Ed Trust is often described as “the most important truth teller” in American public education.  But the organization also works hand in hand with educators and civic leaders in their efforts to transform schools and colleges into institutions that serve all students well. 

Before coming to The Education Trust, Haycock served as Executive Vice President of the Children's Defense Fund, the nation's largest child advocacy organization. 

A native Californian, Haycock founded and served as President of The Achievement Council, a statewide organization that provided assistance to teachers and principals in predominantly minority schools in improving student achievement. She also served as Director of Outreach and Student Affirmative Action programs for the nine-campus University of California system.

Kati Haycock speaks about educational improvement before thousands of educators, community and business leaders, and policymakers each year.  She has received numerous awards for her service on behalf of our nation’s youth, and serves as a director on several education-related boards, including the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, The New Teacher Project, and the Hunt Institute.

Ivy Ellis
Executive Assistant to the President

 

Ivy joined The Education Trust in 2000. She previously worked as an executive assistant/proposal coordinator for Facilities Management Company in Lanham, Md. She has held similar positions for the Department of Defense and other government entities throughout her 25-year career.

Sonja Santelises
Vice President for K-12 Policy and Practice

Sonja provides strategic direction for the organization’s K-12 research, practice, and policy work, which includes developing and implementing strategies to ensure that Ed Trust’s K-12 efforts effectively focus national attention on inequities in public education and the actions necessary to close gaps in both opportunity and achievement.  Before joining The Education Trust, Sonja was the chief academic officer for Baltimore City Public Schools, where she focused on setting academic priorities for City Schools to raise achievement of students across all schools. Sonja came to City Schools from Boston, where she was the assistant superintendent for pilot schools, a network of 23 schools with broad autonomy and a track record of successfully meeting students’ needs and improving the achievement of low-income students and students of color in particular. Prior to the pilot schools post, Sonja was assistant superintendent for teaching and learning/professional development in Boston. Before joining Boston Public Schools, Sonja lectured on urban education for two years at Harvard University and spent six years as a senior associate with Focus on Results Inc., where she worked with five major urban districts, coaching superintendents and training school leaders. Prior to that, Sonja served as executive director of the New York City Algebra Project, the local site of the acclaimed national math reform program, also present in City Schools. Sonja began her career in education as director of professional development and teacher placement with Teach for America, New York, followed by stint at a year-round school in Brooklyn where she was a founder, teacher, and curriculum specialist. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from Brown University, a master of arts in education administration from Columbia University, and a doctor of education in administration, planning, and social policy from Harvard.

Marni Bromberg
Research Associate

Marni comes to Ed Trust with a background in teaching and public policy. After joining Teach for America in 2006, she taught second grade for three years in Atlanta. She then earned a master’s degree in public policy at American University, with a focus in social policy. While at American, she served as a teaching assistant for the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program, which allows students to design and execute community action projects. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Cornell University.
 

Karin Chenoweth
Writer-in-Residence

Karin Chenoweth is writer-in-residence at The Education Trust. She recently co-authored, with Ed Trust’s director of research Christina Theokas, Getting it Done: Leading Academic Success in Unexpected Schools (Harvard Education Press, 2011), a careful study of the beliefs and practices of effective leaders of high-poverty and high-minority schools. Getting It Done builds on two previous books by Chenoweth, “It’s Being Done:” Academic Success in Unexpected Schools (Harvard Education Press, 2007) and How It’s Being Done: Urgent Lessons from Unexpected Schools (Harvard Education Press, 2009).

She has spoken widely about her work, including at the Iowa Governor’s Education Summit, the Illinois Coalition of High Schools, the Learning Forward national conference, the American Federation of Teachers’ QuEST conference, and, with Christina Theokas, at Western Kentucky University, Rutgers University-Camden, and the Hume Region principals conference in Melbourne, Australia.

Before joining Ed Trust, Chenoweth wrote a weekly column on schools and education for The Washington Post. Before that she was senior writer and executive editor for Black Issues In Higher Education (now Diverse). As a freelance writer, she wrote for such publications as Education Week, American Teacher, American Educator, School Library Journal, and the Washington Post Magazine. In addition, she was an active parent volunteer throughout her children’s public schooling in Montgomery County, Md.

Ashley Griffin
Senior Research Associate

As a senior associate for research, Ashley conducts both primary and secondary research to inform decision-makers at the national, state, and local levels, and to generate knowledge that is useful to practitioners in order to raise achievement and close gaps for students of color and low-income students.  Prior to joining the Ed Trust, Ashley worked with the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) as a research and evaluation analyst. She worked on a variety of projects to inform program implementation and instruction. Previously, Ashley served as the director of research and evaluation at Capstone Institute at Howard University.  Her work examined engineering education teaching strategies and the intersection of culture, context, motivation, engagement, and cognition for African American students. Ashley has presented numerous papers, both nationally and internationally, on issues surrounding African American achievement for students grades K-16, and  has served as a member of the of the Journal of Negro Education’s Young Scholar Editorial Board. Ashley holds doctoral and master’s degrees in developmental psychology from Howard University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Georgetown University. 

Daria Hall
Director of K-12 Policy Development

Daria joined The Education Trust in 2003 as a policy analyst. Since then, she has authored reports and participated in national policy conversations about accountability, high school graduation, and standards.  She also leads the organization’s work to identify high-poverty, high-minority, high-performing schools.  Previously, Daria worked as an analyst for the Texas Legislative Council. She is a graduate of Rice University and holds a master’s from the University of Wisconsin.

Brooke Haycock
Senior Playwright-Researcher

A former high school dropout from an urban public school system, playwright-researcher Brooke Haycock has been with The Education Trust for more than a decade. Her issue-focused docudramas, based entirely on interviews with students and educators, transform research into performance, exposing the stories behind the data and driving straight to the heart of debate around equity in schools. Brooke is the author of Ed Trust's Echoes From the Gap series, and her other off-stage writingfocused on student stories and message communication in schoolshas appeared in Phi Delta Kappan and is regularly featured in Ed Trust's blog, The Equity Line. She holds a bachelor’s degree from The University of California–Santa Barbara and a master’s from Johns Hopkins.

 
Allison Horowitz
K-12 Policy Analyst

Allison joined Ed Trust after earning a master’s in public policy from Duke University. While attending graduate school, she consulted on topics such as teacher effectiveness and interned at the New York City Department of Education’s Office of Early Childhood Education. She previously worked as a research assistant at Child Trends, where she participated in research and evaluative projects related to fatherhood and parenting. Allison holds a bachelor’s degree in government and history from Georgetown University.

Rachel Metz
Teacher Quality Data Analyst

Rachel researches, cleans, analyzes, and interprets key teacher data, with a focus on understanding patterns of access to strong, well-supported teachers for low-income students and students of color.  Rachel joined Ed Trust after working as a reporting project coordinator at the American Institutes for Research (AIR). While there, she facilitated the development of value-added model reports for New York, Texas, and the Teacher and Leader Evaluation Systems Study. Prior to joining AIR, she spent time in the classroom as a substitute teacher at a Navajo Nation school. She also worked with Illinois Action for Children to research barriers to accessing and delivering quality early childhood care and education, and to help providers and programs connect with resources for improvement. In addition, she performed demographic and policy research at the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network for their State of the States report.

Rachel holds a master’s degree in Middle East Studies from Ben Gurion University and a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the College of William and Mary.

Hilary Tackie
Research Assistant

Hilary helps develop the organization’s research agenda by conducting literature reviews and analyzing state and federal data, while learning from schools and districts about the practices that are helping to close the achievement gap for students of color and low-income students. Before joining Ed Trust, Hilary worked as a research assistant in the Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at Brown University exploring the effects of socioeconomic status on experience-based learning as well as other studies involving learning, attention, and memory.

Hilary has a bachelor’s degree from Brown University with a concentration in cognitive neuroscience and africana studies.

Christina Theokas
Director of Research

An educator and researcher, Christina Theokas is committed to integrating research, practice, and policy to help improve schools and student outcomes. Currently, she is director of research at The Education Trust, where she co-authored Getting it Done: Leading Academic Success in Unexpected Schools (Harvard Education Press, 2011). Currently, she is working on a number of projects, including documenting the school improvement process in turnaround schools and understanding gaps at the high end of achievement, why they exist, and how to close them.

Prior to joining Ed Trust, she worked in the research and evaluation office of Alexandria City Public Schools in Virginia where she evaluated program efficacy and trained principals and teachers how to understand and use data to make instructional decisions and guide school reform efforts. Previously, Christina worked for 10 years in schools in various capacities, including as a special education teacher, school psychologist, and supervisor of curriculum, assessment, and training. She also led the middle school at a special education school in Massachusetts, where her work focused on developing curriculum and programs to meet the social, emotional, and learning needs of diverse students. Christina holds a doctorate in child development from Tufts University.

Natasha Ushomirsky
K-12 Senior Data and Policy Analyst

Natasha joined The Education Trust after completing a master’s in education policy and management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Before graduate school, she spent three years as a research assistant and associate analyst at Abt Associates, a research and consulting firm.  At Abt, Natasha worked on a variety of research and analysis projects, including economic analyses of environmental regulations and market studies. She holds a bachelor’s in economics and Spanish language and literature from Brandeis University.

David Williams
K-12 Data Analyst

Prior to joining The Education Trust, David worked as a field organizer in southwestern Pennsylvania for President Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign, where he focused on communicating policy issues to local constituents.  David has previously interned at the U.S. Department of Education, working in the Office of Communications and Outreach.  He has also spent time teaching at-risk students in the Pittsburgh area.  David holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations and a master’s degree in public policy, both from Carnegie Mellon University.

José Luis Santos
Vice President for Higher Education Policy and Practice

José Luis oversees all aspects of the organization’s higher education work, which is focused on improving access, affordability, completion, and post-enrollment success for low-income students and students of color.

Prior to joining The Education Trust, José Luis was Associate Professor of Education in the Educational Leadership, Learning Technology, and Organizational Leadership programs at the Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University. Before that, he was an assistant professor in the Higher Education & Organizational Change division at UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, an affiliated scholar of the Higher Education Research Institute, and an affiliated faculty member at the Chicano Studies Research Center. He has written extensively on the economic and financial components of higher education.

Himself a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a first-generation college student, José Luis is galvanized by his belief that federal, state, and institutional policies may not adequately support equitable educational and economic outcomes for traditionally underrepresented students (low-income, people of color, first-generation, and veterans). Instead, they perpetuate lesser outcomes, leading to further stratification.

He earned a doctorate in Higher Education Economics and Finance Policy: Econometrics and Measurement & Research Methodology; a master of arts in Educational Psychology: Measurement & Research Methodology; and a bachelor of arts in Mexican American Studies from the University of Arizona.

Andrew Nichols
Director for Higher Education Research and Data Analytics

As the Director for Higher Education Research and Data Analytics, Andrew helps develop a research agenda that identifies patterns and trends in college access, affordability, and success, with a keen focus on improving outcomes for underserved populations.

Prior to joining the Education Trust, Andrew served as the Director for Research and Policy Analysis at the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). While at MHEC, he led the research division in the development and production of analytical and information reports examining key higher education issues. Prior to that, Andrew worked at the Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education, where his research focused on enhancing educational opportunity for low-income and first-generation college students.  Andrew has also co-authored several book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles that have been published in the Review of Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, and Teachers College Record.  He holds a Ph.D. in higher education administration from The Pennsylvania State University, a master’s degree from the University of Southern California and a bachelor’s from Vanderbilt University.

Meredith Welch
Higher Education Research and Policy Assistant

As a member of the Higher Education team, Meredith supports various projects including the Access to Success Initiative and the College Results Online portfolio. Prior to joining The Education Trust, she worked as a research assistant at the University of Michigan on an evaluation of a girls’ empowerment and education program taking place in rural India. While a student at the University of Michigan, Meredith taught Spanish to elementary students and tutored an English-Language-Learner in math and writing. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and Spanish from the University of Michigan.

Deborah Veney
Vice President for Government Affairs and Communications

As Vice President for Government Affairs and Communications at The Education Trust, Deborah is the strategic leader of the organization’s legislative, communications, and field operations work. 

Before joining the Ed Trust, Deborah managed media relations for domestic-facing investments at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She has also served as the vice president of communications for two national nonprofit organizations in the education sector: the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and Communities In Schools.  In both of these roles, she was responsible for developing and executing strategic communications plans, and for providing management and oversight for the media relations, advertising, publications, executive communications, and marketing functions of the organization. Prior to entering the nonprofit arena, Deborah built a solid career in corporate communications, working with an impressive array of Fortune 500 corporations, including United Healthcare, DuPont, and CIGNA Corp.  Her experiences include media relations, crisis communications, speech writing, community relations, internal communications, corporate publications, and investor relations communications.

Deborah was the founding board chair of the Philadelphia affiliate of Komen for the Cure, and currently serves on the board of directors for the D.C. Jazz Festival.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Howard University, and a master’s degree in mass communications from Temple University.

 

Anneliese Bruner
Senior Web Editor

Before joining the Ed Trust, Anneliese worked as an independent writer and editor serving such private and government clients as Langhum Mitchell Communications, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and, on projects in the United States and East Africa, the U.S. Agency for International Development. She worked previously as a contributing editor at Black Entertainment Television, and for McKinsey & Co. as an electric power information specialist, where she managed a pro bono mentoring program for students at H.G. Woodson Senior High School in Washington, D.C. She is an alumna of Bryn Mawr College, and her work has appeared in Black Issues in Higher Education, Journal of EDM Finance, Honey Magazine, Savoy Magazine, and USAID’s FrontLines.

Iris Maria Chávez
Assistant Field Director

Prior to joining the Education Trust, Iris Maria served as Deputy Director for Education Policy & Outreach at the League of United Latin American Citizens, where she oversaw LULAC’s state and federal education policy work. In this capacity she worked to deepen LULAC’s understanding of state and federal school reform, and expanded the relationships between LULAC’s grassroots education advocates and state and federal policymakers. Prior to LULAC, Iris Maria worked as a Legislative Associate for the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), where she was a junior lobbyist assisting FRAC’s state and local network on food assistance programs and governmental processes at the federal level.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, History & African Diaspora Studies from Tulane University and a Master of Arts degree in Social Policy from the University of Chicago. 

Ebony Daughtry
Administrative Assistant to Government Affairs and Communications, and K-12 Policy and Practice

Ebony Daughtry graduated from Strayer University with an associate degree in business administration. Before coming to The Education Trust, Ebony was the office coordinator at National Academy for State Health Policy. In this role, she oversaw the academy’s day-to-day office activities, maintaining the COO/CFO calendar, working with all vendors, securing estimates for three renovations, and ordering office supplies.

Jack Fleming
Senior Associate for Digital Communications

As the senior associate for digital communications at the Ed Trust, Jack leads the digital advocacy strategy, planning, and execution of our online outreach to effect change. Jack brings more than eight years of experience in the digital media space. Prior to joining The Education Trust, Jack worked for a number of non-profit and for-profit companies, running everything from campaigns to pass a local city ordinance to a 50-state national campaign for comprehensive reform.

Jack has a master’s degree in political management from George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Santa Clara University.

Nicolle Grayson
Director of Communications

With more than 10 years of experience in issues advocacy, media relations, and strategic planning, Nicolle advances the organization’s equity agenda by disseminating its work and message to a wide variety of stakeholders nationwide, including policymakers, practitioners, advocates, parents, and students. Prior to that, Nicolle was a communications manager for The Pew Charitable Trusts where she oversaw outreach efforts on behalf of the Kids’ Safe & Healthful Foods Project, a joint initiative of Pew and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Nicolle has also worked at D.C.-based public and media relations firms, Widmeyer Communications and The Caraway Group, where she served nonprofit, government, and corporate clients.  She has a master’s degree in education policy, and leadership from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a bachelor’s degree from Spelman College.

Nehemiah Green
Field Associate

As the field associate at the Ed Trust, Nehemiah will help design and lead programs to identify, educate, and mobilize key individuals, constituencies, and organizations outside of Washington, D.C., around The Education Trust’s message, agenda, and specific policy proposals. Prior to joining The Education Trust, Nehemiah served as an Outreach and Engagement Associate with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). In this capacity, he developed foundational relationships with community advocates from across the country. Previously, he served as a Policy Advisor for the Department of Labor’s Office of Disability and Employment Policy (ODEP), where he worked to influence national policy and promote effective workplace practices, including helping youth with disabilities transition from school to adulthood and the working world.  He is a graduate of Tufts University and of the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Robin Harris Smiles
Managing Editor

Robin brings more than 15 years of writing, editing, and production experience to The Education Trust. As the leader of our editorial and design team, she is responsible for managing a smooth and efficient production process and helping to ensure that we convey our message in a clear and compelling fashion. Most recently, she was editorial director at Education Sector, where she managed the editorial and production processes for the organization’s in-house publications. Previously, she served as associate editor of the biweekly publication Diverse Issues in Higher Education, deputy editor at Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News, and a copy-editor at several daily newspapers. Robin’s writing has focused on issues facing students of color in higher education, including lowering student loan default rates, increasing diversity in international education, and eliminating health disparities. She earned a master's and a doctorate in English from the University of Maryland, and a bachelor's from Howard University.

Lynn Jennings
Legislative Affairs Associate

Prior to joining the Education Trust team, Lynn was a senior program manager for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. She directed the foundation’s professional fellowship programs for young professionals working on Capitol Hill and was responsible for the strategic management of all of the foundation’s education programs.  She taught at Spelman College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English literature, and at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where she completed her doctoral work. 

Sela Lewis
Graphic Designer

Sela Lewis, graphic designer at The Education Trust, has worked in such varied settings as commercial real estate, law firms, and political campaigns. Her involvement in education activism in high school and summers during college working with children at her neighborhood Boys & Girls Club have shaped Sela’s knowledge about the issues The Education Trust supports. A graduate of Howard University, she holds a bachelor of fine arts in graphic design. For Sela, graphic design is about effectively communicating ideas visually so that good ideas become great — a bit like fine cooking, which calls for quality ingredients, coupled with intuition about flavors, colors, and textures.

Blair Mann
Senior Associate for Communications

Blair is the primary point-of-contact for media outlets on K-12 and teacher quality issues.  She also supports efforts to increase awareness of, and commitment to, our mission by creating and carrying out media relations strategies and tracking their results. Prior to joining The Education Trust, Blair worked at DCI Group where she advised clients on media, public affairs, and communications strategies pertaining to policy issues ranging from education to international finance. Before DCI Group, Blair worked in both the District and Capitol Hill offices of U.S. Representative Chaka Fattah (D - PA).  A native of Philadelphia,  Blair holds a master’s degree from the George Washington University in public policy, concentrating in education policy, and a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and political science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Phillip Mauller
State Legislative Affairs Associate

Phillip supports the organization’s efforts to keep abreast of a variety of state policy issues by tracking education related legislation and regulations in the states, and serves as resource to state-level advocates working on equity-oriented legislative proposals.  He joined The Education Trust with more than six years of experience in state legislation and policy research, including serving as a Legislative Assistant with the National Alliance for Model State Drug Laws, where he was responsible for tracking legislation and conducting research on state policy.  Phillip holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Lipscomb University and a master’s degree in political management from the George Washington University.

Latasha Myers
Legislative Affairs Assistant

Prior to joining The Education Trust, Latasha worked as a marketing assistant for the University of South Carolina’s study abroad office, where she expanded the organization’s mission to promote diversity in international learning. Latasha has also previously interned for Jim Rex’s South Carolina gubernatorial campaign. As the legislative affairs assistant at the Ed Trust, Latasha tracks all education-related legislation, collaborates with external organizations and stakeholders who share our mission, and advances the Ed Trust’s goal of closing opportunity and achievement gaps through federal policy. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology from the University of South Carolina. 

Allison Nambo
Production and Design Assistant

As a member of the Editorial and Design team, Allie supports various Ed Trust projects by designing and updating both print and digital collateral. Prior to joining the Ed Trust, she worked with The Corcoran Gallery of Art’s Youth and Family department as a teaching artist for ArtReach in Schools, a program that provides additional fine-art enrichment to many DCPS and DCPCS middle schools. Allie received her bachelor of fine arts in graphic design from the Corcoran College of Art + Design, where she was a student admissions ambassador, resident advisor, peer mentor, and co-founder of the Corcoran Student Council. She also co-managed the college’s Design Lab team, a group of student designers responsible for developing the brand identity and producing the design collateral for the Next 2013 thesis exhibition of graduating students.

Mandy Zatynski
Assistant Editor/Writer

As a member of our editorial team, Mandy supports efforts to ensure clear and consistent style and grammar across our publications. Most recently, she worked at Education Sector, where she wrote about issues in higher education outside of a traditional, four-year degree, and she continues to push for more affordable, flexible higher education options for students.  Previously, Mandy was an education reporter for various small dailies across the country and spent three years in Spain teaching English to children and adults. Outside of The Education Trust, she edits the blog for Young Education Professionals-DC (YEP-DC) and tutors a first-grader. She is a first-generation college student, a graduate of Ohio State University, and plans to spend her career supporting practices and reforms that benefit students with similar backgrounds.

Ericka Miller
Vice President for Operations and Strategic Leadership

Ericka is the Education Trust’s chief operating officer. Before joining the staff of the Ed Trust, Ericka was vice president and director of the national executive search firm Isaacson, Miller, where she led the firm’s K-12 education practice, helping to place capable leaders in mission-driven organizations and university schools of education. Prior to joining the firm, Ericka was president and chief operating officer of The McKenzie Group (now part of American Institutes for Research), a comprehensive education consulting firm with a 20-year history of providing evaluation and technical assistance services to school districts, institutions of higher education, federal agencies, foundations, and other public and private organizations. Ericka also served as legislative assistant to former U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey, advising the senator on all elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education policy issues. Before her time on the Hill, Ericka was assistant professor of English literature at Mills College, in Oakland, Calif.  Prior to launching her career in education, she was an editor at the Washingtonian magazine. Ericka holds a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and a doctorate from Stanford University. She is a member of Leadership Washington's Class of 2004, and she serves on a number of nonprofit boards.

Kaylé Barnes
Development Assistant

As Development Assistant for the Ed Trust, Kaylé supports the development team in its efforts to build the organization’s relationships with our supporters and to foster a culture of development across the organization. Prior to joining The Education Trust team, Kaylé worked as Assistant Area Director for AIPAC’s Dallas office and then in the public affairs department of a trade association. While in Dallas, she became active in education reform at a local level by encouraging parents to vote in local school board elections as part of an organized effort. Kaylé is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Journalism and minored in French and International and Area Studies.  

Tom Gilmer
Chief Financial Officer

Tom was chief financial officer for the Center for Policy Alternatives, a national nonprofit that provides technical assistance to state policymakers. Tom previously was controller and general accounting manager for the National Academy of Sciences. He began his finance and accounting career with Advanced Computer Techniques Corporation in New York City. Tom graduated from Hofstra University and is a certified public accountant.

Jane Grant
Human Resources and Operations Coordinator

Jane supports the human resources and operations functions within the organization.  She comes to the Ed Trust from McDonald’s Corporation where she was an HR coordinator primarily, but she also worked with several other departments on special projects to gain a better understanding of the organization as a whole. While at McDonald’s, Jane managed several projects, including a summer internship program that allowed her the opportunity to work and mentor college students while teaching them about the organization. Jane received her bachelor’s degree in psychology at Washington College and a dual master’s degree (MBA and master’s in human resource management) from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Melva Jones
Director of Meetings and Conferences

Melva comes to the Ed Trust from the National Legal Aid and Defender Association, where she was the meetings and events manager; and she was the first full-time strategic events manager for College Summit, Inc. In these positions, Melva’s work included writing event operations publications, supervising concurrent events across 13 affiliate offices, training junior events professionals, and managing a multifarious centennial celebration. She was responsible for a budget in excess of $4 million. In the nonprofit, entertainment, corporate, and association sectors, Melva has directly managed conventions, festivals, galas, and special events, some with up to 60,000 attendees. She holds degrees with distinction from Howard and Columbia Universities, respectively, and is currently expanding her knowledge base in the culinary arts.

Judy Karasik
Senior Associate for Development

Judy comes to the Ed Trust with experience as an editor, writer, trainer, fundraiser, consultant, and project manager. She has worked in and written extensively about national service and youth development, has managed national technical assistance projects, and has edited fiction by writers including Louise Erdrich and Julius Lester. With her brother, the graphic novelist Paul Karasik, she is co-author of the dual-format book The Ride Together: A Brother and Sister’s Memoir of Autism in the Family (Simon & Schuster, 2003). She has lived both in the USA and abroad and is a graduate of Oberlin College.

Maleka Lawrence
Managing Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships

In leading development for the Ed Trust, Maleka guides our efforts to forge productive relationships that ensure sustainability and help advance the organization’s mission. Previously, Maleka served as director of development at Harlem RBI, a youth development organization in New York City. Under her leadership, Harlem RBI nearly doubled its revenue, launched a $20 million capital campaign, and implemented a rebranding plan. Earlier, Maleka was a development associate at The Family Center in New York City and served as a clinical social worker, assisting families affected by life-threatening illnesses. Maleka received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from American University and her master of social work degree from New York University. She also completed Columbia University’s Institute for Non-Profit Management certificate program in nonprofit leadership.

Andrea Maertens
Director of Human Resources and Office Administration

Andrea was regional operations manager for the Washington, D.C., office of Isaacson, Miller, an executive search firm. She previously was the office manager for the law firm Brown & Gould and assistant to the MBA Admissions Department at A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University. Andrea is a Tulane graduate and holds a Professional in Human Resources certification.

Chantel McCloud
Senior Accountant

A graduate of Howard University, Chantel has more than 14 years of accounting experience. Before joining The Education Trust, she was the United Way of America’s manager of grants and contracts and lead associate for accounts receivable. Chantel previously worked at the Center for Policy Alternatives as manager of accounts payable and payroll.

Deborah Pullen
Accounting Assistant

 

Deborah is responsible for all aspects of accounts payable and other day-to-day accounting duties at Ed Trust. She brings with her many years of accounting experience from prior employment with a D.C.-based law firm and other associations, including more than eight years as finance coordinator for the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Loretta Singleton
Receptionist and Administrative Assistant

Before joining Ed Trust, Loretta was the administrative assistant to Floretta Dukes McKenzie, a former superintendent of schools in the District of Columbia. She performed similar duties for the American Institutes for Research. Loretta previously worked as a payroll supervisor, data-entry specialist, and in various other administrative positions for the George Washington University.
