Making Sure All Students Learn: The Role of Principals, Districts, and State Leaders

Guest: Arelis Díaz, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum/Instruction and Human Resources, Godwin Heights Public Schools. At North Godwin Heights Elementary near Grand Rapids, Mich., 70 percent of students qualify for free and reduced-priced meals. Many don’t speak English at home. Yet under the leadership of Díaz and the current principal, students meet or exceed state standards.

Expert Discussant: Dr. Bradley Portin, director of the Education Program at the University of Washington Bothell. Dr. Portin is a leading researcher on school leadership who has helped document the role of principals in school improvement.
