“Catching-Up:” What High Schools Do To Get Better Than Expected Growth With Low-Performing Ninth-Grade Students

The panel will present the results of a study conducted by the Education Trust that looked at two sets of schools, one that achieved average growth and one that achieved better-than-expected growth with ninth-graders who entered behind academically. We wanted to know what the second group did to get students on track to graduate and prepared to meet postsecondary requirements. Leaders from Los Altos High School, one of the “high-impact” schools in the study, will discuss the initiatives they put in place to “catch students up.” They will talk about their curriculum, their guidance initiatives and provide specific examples of support programs they put in place. Los Altos is a public, comprehensive high school with a high proportion of Latino students and students from low-income families. Los Altos was designated a “California Distinguished School” in 2005.
