It’s one of the thorniest questions in education today: What constitutes solid education research? And even when researchers do make discoveries that help raise student achievement, there is often an enormous chasm between those research-based findings and the practices that govern day-to-day classroom instruction. In this session, Dr. Phoebe Cottingham, commissioner of education evaluation and regional assistance in the Institute of Education Sciences, will discuss the federal government’s new efforts to transform education research and to spread the news to policymakers and educators about what actually works.
