High Hopes, Stellar Results: Griegos Elementary School

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

With most of their students coming from working-class Hispanic families, Griegos Elementary isn’t the kind of school that ordinarily attracts wealthy white families. But in recent years, reports Principal Tom Graham, white parents from the affluent neighborhood nearby have been enrolling their children, drawn by student achievement at Griegos that considerably outpaces statewide results. Hear how this Albuquerque school matches its instruction to its high expectations for all students. Teachers—many of them veterans who taught their students’ parents—call their instruction “traditional,” but their success breaks new ground.
