If Students Aren’t Learning, They Are Not Being Taught Powerfully: Leading for Instructional Improvement

Closing the achievement gap depends first and foremost on our ability to improve the quality of instruction; and district leaders must take an active role in leading for instructional improvement. This presentation will focus on the preliminary research results from a unique partnership of several urban school districts in which both district and school leaders receive intensive support in their work to: (1) define the instructional practices, structures, and routines that are conducive to powerful student learning and to the adult professional development that supports it; (2) hone their leadership practices and routines which support, nurture, and push the development of such practices across the district.
