Opening Plenary Session: When the Going Gets Tough: Smart Choices and Bold Action to Raise Achievement and Close Gaps
Tough times—for our schools, as well as for the families they serve—require a lot from all of us. They require an honest appraisal of where we are, a careful assessment of what is working and what is not, and an all-out focus on what matters most. But in crisis there also is opportunity—opportunity to do what is right for kids faster than under normal circumstances. In this opening address, Ed Trust President Kati Haycock will share heartening data on recent progress and the alarming numbers on where we’re stalled. Most important, though, she’ll talk about what participants in this conference really want to know: how tough-minded leaders around the country have turned other crises into opportunities to bring about significant positive change.
