Session 28: Partnership, Not Polarity: A Model of K-16 Collaboration to Improve Students’ Reading and Writing Abilities
Too often, K-12 systems and local universities work to improve their students’ literacy skills in isolation from each other, sometimes working at cross purposes that ultimately frustrate the very students they aim to serve. This session will discuss an innovative and effective collaboration between the Hamilton County TN school district and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s writing program that has transformed middle school, high school, and college literacy instruction; improved the district’s performance on state-wide measures of writing ability; and led to a dramatic decrease in the number of Hamilton County graduates needing remediation in the university’s writing program.
