Session 49: Supporting Secondary Literacy Reform in a Low-Resource Context: The Pasadena Story

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

The Pasadena Unified School District in Pasadena CA developed a strategic plan in 2003-04 that prioritized increasing students’ literacy at the secondary level and allocated significant resources to support that goal. By initially targeting ninth-grade literacy and contracting with a high-quality vendor, CORE Learning, to help implement the initiative, the district laid the groundwork to achieve rapid and significant improvement in student performance, especially for some of its lowest-skilled students. This session will examine specific strategies employed systemwide that contributed to the strong results across the district.
