Session 62: School Counselors as Instructional Leaders: Voices from the Field
Presenter(s):
Mark Kuranz, School Counselor, Case High School, Racine, WI
Peggy Hines, School Counselor Program Director, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN
For the past nine years, The Education Trust has spear-headed the National Transforming School Counseling Initiative (NTSCI). The fundamental belief of NTSCI is that school counselors are critical players in standards-based reform and must be leaders and advocates within their schools. NTSCI consultation and training programs have promoted change at two levels: university school counselor education programs and practicing school counselors. This presentation will outline the essential components of the NTSCI efforts and share numerous examples of how these “new breed” school counselors are working as instructional advocates in schools who lead efforts to improve achievement and close the gaps.
