The Art of Delegation: Turning Department Chairs Into Instructional Leaders
Given the size of most high schools, a principal can’t singlehandedly keep tabs on the quality of all the teaching. How to square that circle? John Capozzi, principal of Elmont Memorial Junior-Senior High School on New York’s Long Island, gives his answer: putting department chairs on the instructional leadership team in a way that counts. This approach builds high standards and challenging curricula within each subject area. At Elmont, a 2005 Dispelling the Myth Award winner, chairs coach department teachers and drive school improvement.
