Calls on leaders to take action and invest in raising learning

ROYAL OAK, MICH. (January 16, 2014)  — Tonight, the Education Trust- Midwest applauds Governor Rick Snyder for his recognition of the importance of teacher support and evaluation in his State of the State speech.

Governor Snyder asked the Michigan legislature to take action to put into place Michigan’s first statewide educator support and evaluation system.  This call to action follows this week’s introduction of a new bill sponsored by Representative Margaret O’Brien, which is designed to put the new system into place.  The proposed system’s blueprint was developed by the Michigan Council for Educator Effectiveness, which was chaired by Dean Deborah Ball of the University of Michigan’s School of Education. The Council’s final report was released late last summer.

“Leading education states have all invested in thoughtful teacher support and evaluation systems that are focused on raising teaching and learning,” said Amber Arellano, executive director of the Education Trust-Midwest, a non-partisan education policy and research organization which has advocated for the new system.  “Michigan students and teachers deserve such a system geared to support improvement.”

“Now, in the coming weeks, state leaders need to take legislative action — and allocate appropriate budget dollars — to ensure that all of this work benefits both Michigan’s students and educators,” Arellano added.

Ed Trust-Midwest thanks the state leaders, such as Dean Deborah Ball, the Snyder Administration and Representative Margaret O’ Brien, for the tremendous work that they have done to raise teaching quality in Michigan.

The Education Trust-Midwest is Michigan’s only statewide nonpartisan policy, research and advocacy organization focused on what is best for Michigan students. Our mission is to work for the high achievement of all students, particularly low-income, African-American, Latino and American-Indian students in Michigan, and to provide honest, reliable information to our state’s families and policymakers.
