    December 1-
    LARGE numbers of children, especially low-income African-Americans and Latinos, are being taught critical core courses - English, math, science, and social studies - by teachers who have neither an academic major nor a teaching certificate in the subjects they teach. And states have been glossing over the problem while the U.S. Department of Education looked the other way.

    December 2-
    Among the school's achievements this year were high sixth-grade scores. The students scored a 96 percent proficiency in math, with 67 percent of those students scoring advanced, said elementary principal Vicki Hurst. In literacy, 95 percent scored proficient with 57 percent scoring advanced.

    S.F. schools chief wants higher bar for grads San Francisco Chronicle
    November 21-
    San Francisco schools Superintendent Carlos Garcia wants to raise the bar for earning a high school diploma - requiring every graduating senior, starting with the class of 2014, to pass all the college prep classes required for admission to the University of California and California State University systems.
